Talking Botox

By far one of our most sought after treatments is Botox*. We love it and patients love it because it produces predictable, visible results in just a matter of days. Botox has applications for nearly all patients of all ages but our favourite way to use this treatment is for prevention! As with most things in life, it’s easier to prevent fine lines and wrinkles than reverse them.

When to start? There is no exact age when a person should consider starting to use Botox; the best gauge is when you start to notice lines from muscle movement start to stick around, or makeup beginning to settle in those lines. For most people this is in their mid/late 20s or early 30s.

Will it look like I’ve had something done? Botox doesn’t have to look unnatural or exaggerated. Gone are the days of the frozen face or the “surprised” Botox look, the trend has definitely moved towards a more natural softening of fine lines and deeper wrinkles. Small amounts of botox can go a long way to eliminate wrinkles while still allowing for facial movement. It can be perfect for those patients who want something minimal, natural, and subtle.

New to aesthetics and wondering how neuromodulators (aka Botox) works in the first place? Targeting one of the underlying causes of lines and wrinkles, our repeated muscle contractions, injecting Botox into the muscles of the face temporarily reduces muscle activity and minimizes the wrinkles we have from facial movement (eg. forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and crows feet). When you frown or concentrate, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold creating “number 11” lines, and when you squint or laugh, the muscles around your eyes contract and cause crow’s feet. Botox works beneath the skin’s surface targeting the muscle activity that cause these lines.
