Banish Dry Winter Skin
Does it feel like your skin has been screaming lately? You’re not alone. Seasonal weather changes can wreak havoc on your skin, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, nobody has time for that!
The dry and cold weather in the winter months can strip your skin of moisture and leave you faced with a range of “winter skin” problems. Good thing that there are a few simple solutions that can spare you from that dry, itchy, angry skin!
Below we have taken the guessing game out of your winter skincare routine with a few expert approved tips that will leave your skin radiant and moisturized all year long.
1) Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!
We shed over 10 billion skin cells a day (about 23 kg over a lifetime) and exfoliation plays a key role in clearing the dead skin buildup. When our skin dries out over the winter months, it can actually become less efficient at exfoliation, leaving our skin with a dry, dull appearance. One of the best ways to exfoliate away winter dryness is with a monthly medical peel. By getting rid of old, dead skin cells, medical peels speed up the renewal process on the top layer of the skin leaving the skin more receptive to moisturizers to replenish and protect it during the dry, winter months.
2) SPF it up!
90% of visible signs of skin aging are due to sun damage. Even when there are 8 inches of snow on the ground, you still run the risk of sun damage to your skin. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis layer of the skin affecting collagen, elastin and blood vessels. They are present 365 days of the year at equal intensity during all daylight hours. Protect your skin by using a broad spectrum sunscreen every single day with an SPF of at least 30. We like the AlumierMD sunscreens especially because they are packed with different types of antioxidants for a full range of protection.
3) Keep your skin hydrated!
There are a few easy steps to make sure your skin stays moisturized over the winter months.
The first step would be to choose the right moisturizer. Many over-the-counter moisturizers have petroleum based ingredients that can actually further dry your skin in the winter. Choose a shea butter and hyaluronic acid based formula like the AlumierMD HydraDew which will help retain moisture and soothe dry skin.
Secondly, make sure that you are moisturizing directly after your shower. Applying moisturizer to damp skin will help seal the dampness into the skin.
Another important tip is to hydrate from the inside out. We tend to consume less water during the winter months in favour of warm dehydrating beverages such as cocoa and coffee. Switch out your afternoon coffee for some warm lemon water to keep yourself hydrated from within.
Lastly, try hydrating your skin with a HydraFacial treatment. The HydraFacial is a medical grade facial that brightens, tightens and intensely improves hydration of the skin.
